The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has deployed a medical team to Tiffin Manza Primary School in Mokwa to assist children and pregnant women affected by recent flooding in the Unguwan Hausawa area of Mokwa Local Government Area.
According to Teresa Pamma, UNICEF’s Water and Hygiene Specialist, the deployment is aimed at ensuring that affected residents gain access to essential healthcare services and at preventing potential disease outbreaks in the aftermath of the flood.

She noted that the medical team would also provide specialised care for pregnant women, ensuring they receive adequate medical attention and are safeguarded against illnesses that could harm them or their unborn babies.
The UNICEF team, which arrived shortly after the incident to assess the extent of the flooding and respond to the needs of the affected children, also organised recreational activities for some of the youngsters to help alleviate emotional distress and provide psychological relief.
One of the beneficiaries, Malama Fatima Jibrin, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for the timely medical assistance, stating that it had helped address several health concerns among their children.

Another victim, 28-year-old Habiba Abdullahi, who lost four of her children to the flood, tearfully thanked UNICEF, revealing that her only surviving child had received immediate medical care.
The Niger State Government also lauded UNICEF for its prompt intervention, emphasising that the support would go a long way in curbing the spread of disease in the flood-affected and contaminated environment.
During a visit to the UNICEF medical stand, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, commended the organisation’s dedication, describing it as a strong reflection of its commitment to saving the lives of children impacted by the disaster.
UNICEF, globally recognised for its advocacy and support for children, has once again demonstrated its commitment by responding swiftly to the health crisis in Mokwa, where women and children make up the majority of the victims.
