United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned in strong terms the deadly terrorist attack that struck parts of Kwara State in north-central Nigeria, reportedly claiming more than 100 lives.
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Guterres described the incident as a heinous act and stressed the need for those responsible to be swiftly identified and held accountable.
According to reports, gunmen linked to the Memuda sect launched coordinated attacks on Nuku and Woro communities late Tuesday night, continuing into the early hours of Wednesday. The assault left many residents dead, with homes and other property destroyed.
The UN chief expressed his “heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of Nigeria,” while also wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

He reaffirmed the United Nations’ support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism, emphasising the importance of justice for the victims.
“The Secretary-General reiterates the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and people of Nigeria in their efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism and stresses the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
Media reports indicate that armed groups stormed the rural communities, forcing residents to flee into surrounding bush areas as attackers burned houses and shops. The death toll is expected to rise as search efforts continue.
The incident is regarded as one of the deadliest attacks in the area in recent months and comes amid escalating insecurity across Nigeria’s north-west and north-central regions, where civilians have increasingly become targets.
