The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad hoc committee tasked with organising a special security conference to address ongoing security challenges in Plateau State and beyond.
Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday in Abuja, Chairman of the committee, Rep. Hammed Waheed (APC–Lagos), lamented the persistent crises in the state.
He noted that the protracted insecurity in Plateau had led to repeated outbreaks of violence, displacing families, devastating livelihoods, and deepening mistrust among ethnic and religious communities.
“These tragic developments are not isolated. They reverberate beyond Plateau State, affecting neighbouring regions and undermining national stability,” he said.
Waheed recalled that the House, during plenary on 8 May, in response to public concern, mandated the establishment of the committee.
“Our mandate is clear: to convene a special security conference that will bring together key stakeholders—security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organisations,” he said.
He added that the conference would also engage youths, women’s groups, researchers, and political actors in honest and constructive dialogue aimed at generating sustainable solutions.

“This is not just another conference. It is an opportunity for truth-telling, healing, dialogue, and to put forward decisive recommendations,” he said.
The lawmaker stressed that the objective is not merely to identify problems, but to develop viable pathways towards lasting peace, justice, security, and reconciliation.
He charged members of the committee to carry out their duties with integrity, impartiality, and sensitivity.
The committee was further tasked with engaging stakeholders in affected communities and beyond, identifying root causes and triggers of the conflicts, and designing an inclusive framework and agenda for the conference.
Waheed emphasised the importance of ensuring broad representation in the conference and producing a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations.
“The eyes of the public are on this committee. This is not about politics; it is about people, communities, peace, and the soul of our nation.
“Let us work collaboratively and diligently. Let us listen more than we speak, and let us lead with empathy and courage,” he urged.
