Inter Milan suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Udinese in Serie A on Sunday, despite taking an early lead through Denzel Dumfries.
Inter, who opened their campaign with a 5-0 win over Torino, looked a shadow of that dominant side. Dumfries gave them the advantage in the 17th minute, tapping in from a Marcus Thuram assist. But Udinese, already threatening before the opener, equalised 12 minutes later when Dumfries conceded a penalty for handball, which Keinan Davis confidently converted.
Five minutes before the break, Udinese struck again. Davis released Arthur Atta, who drove forward and curled a precise finish from the edge of the box into the far corner. Manager Kosta Runjaic praised Atta’s impact, saying: “After last season, I realised where we could improve, and Atta was one with more potential. Now he has certainly become more dangerous.”
Inter rallied after the interval. Thuram headed over from a Federico Dimarco cross, and Dimarco later thought he had equalised only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Thuram admitted the hosts had started too slowly.
“We have to start games as we did in the second half,” he told Inter TV. “By playing like this we will be able to overturn unfavourable situations.”
Davis nearly extended Udinese’s lead with a dazzling solo run, but shot wide. Inter pressed hard in the closing stages, yet the visitors’ resolute defending secured their first win at San Siro since 2017. “In the second half it was much more difficult for us,” Runjaic said. “We defended in the trenches with intense focus and a hellish defence.”
The result leaves Udinese on four points after two matches, while Inter, under new manager Cristian Chivu, face early pressure in the title race. Defending champions Napoli top the table with maximum points, joined by Juventus, AS Roma and newly promoted Cremonese.
