Tottenham Hotspur ended a 17-year wait for silverware by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the 2025 UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday at San Mamés Stadium, Bilbao.
The only goal of the match came in the 42nd minute from Brennan Johnson, whose shot deflected off Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, beating goalkeeper André Onana. Despite Manchester United dominating possession with 65% and more shots on target, Tottenham’s resilient defence, led by Man of the Match Cristian Romero, held firm.
The Spurs’ victory not only secured their first trophy since 2008 but also guaranteed qualification for the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, providing a bright spot after a challenging Premier League season.
Manchester United, meanwhile, struggled to convert chances and will be left to reflect on a disappointing campaign, with manager Ruben Amorim’s position reportedly under review.
Speaking after the match, Tottenham’s coach praised his players’ discipline and spirit, highlighting the importance of their defensive organisation and composure under pressure.
