Tunisia Seal World Cup Spot with Late Win in Equatorial Guinea

Mohamed Ben Romdhane scored a 94th-minute winner as Tunisia sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over hosts Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Monday.

The result moved Tunisia to 22 points from eight qualifiers, giving them an unassailable 10-point lead over second-placed Namibia, who have three games left.

Coached by Sami Trabelsi, Tunisia will be making their seventh appearance at the global finals — and their third in succession — when the tournament is staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July 2026.

It looked as though the Carthage Eagles would have to wait to confirm their spot, but Ben Romdhane tapped in deep into stoppage time after Firas Chaouat capitalised on a defensive mistake.

Tunisia become the second African nation to secure qualification, following Morocco’s success on Saturday. The Atlas Lions continued their momentum with a 2-0 win away to Zambia on Monday, courtesy of goals from Youssef En Nesyri and Hamza Igamane.

Elsewhere, Mozambique kept their hopes alive in Group G with a 2-0 victory over Botswana in Maputo, thanks to goals from Witi and Faisal Banga. They sit three points behind leaders Algeria, though having played a game more.

Africa will have nine automatic slots at the 2026 World Cup, with a 10th place to be decided via an intercontinental play-off.
