Taiwan President Reaffirms Peace Bid, Pledges Stronger Defence

On 20 May 2025, marking his first year in office, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed his commitment to peace and dialogue with China, while emphasising the need to strengthen Taiwan’s defences amid escalating tensions.

President Lai stated, Peace is priceless, and war has no winners. But when it comes to seeking peace, we cannot have dreams or illusions.” He stressed that while Taiwan is open to exchanges and cooperation with China based on mutual respect, the island must remain vigilant and prepared to defend its sovereignty.

China, which views Lai as a separatist, has intensified military activities near Taiwan, including recent drills codenamed Strait Thunder-2025A.” In response, President Lai has called for bolstering Taiwan’s defence capabilities, asserting that preparing for war is essential to securing peace.

Domestically, Lai faces political challenges, with opposition parties criticising his policies and blocking parts of his agenda. Nevertheless, he has extended offers for national security briefings to opposition leaders to ease partisan tensions.

In addition to defence matters, President Lai highlighted economic initiatives, including ongoing trade discussions with the United States and plans for a sovereign wealth fund to support Taiwan’s technology-driven economy. He also visited major tech exhibitors at the Computex trade show, emphasising the importance of artificial intelligence and Taiwan’s role in global innovation.

President Lai’s administration continues to advocate for peace while reinforcing the island’s defence and economic resilience.
