The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia are set for a decisive Group C Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) encounter at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Saturday.
With knockout-stage progression at stake, Saturday’s match promises intensity as both sides aim to consolidate their positions in the group. Kick-off is scheduled for 9pm (WAT).
Nigeria and Tunisia share a long-standing rivalry, having met 21 times across all competitions. Nigeria has won five of those encounters, Tunisia six, while ten ended in draws. In AFCON finals, Nigeria holds a slight edge with three wins against Tunisia’s one, with two matches previously decided on penalties. Their most recent AFCON clash was in the 2021 round of 16, when Tunisia secured a 1-0 victory through a Youssef Msakni strike.
Tunisia enters the match with a strong record in second-group stage games, winning three and drawing two of their last five. Midfielder Ellyes Skhiri also celebrated a milestone by scoring Tunisia’s 100th goal in AFCON history during their opening match.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle praised the North Africans, saying, “Tunisia are a big team with a strong playing identity and a solid World Cup qualifying campaign behind them. They play good football and started this tournament very well. But we have a good team too, and we are improving with every match. We may either let Tunisia have the ball and play directly when we recover it, or continue with our philosophy.”
He added: “There is no pressure on us this tournament is an opportunity to correct what went wrong before and continue building our identity.”
Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi, meanwhile, expressed confidence in his side. “Nigeria are strong offensively and defensively. All players will be involved, not only defenders. We focus only on the field; social media or past results will not affect us,” he said. Trabelsi also confirmed that key forward Hazem is fit and emphasised that his team has studied Nigeria’s weaknesses to secure a positive result.
Nigeria comes into the game unbeaten in their last seven AFCON group matches and has scored in 13 of their last 14 tournament games, underlining their attacking consistency. Tunisia, meanwhile, seeks to build on their solid start in Morocco 2025.
