The Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has announced plans for the maiden edition of the 10-kilometre Asaba International Road Race, set to take place on 5 October.

Azinge revealed the details at a media briefing held at his palace in Asaba on Wednesday, where he formally launched the event.

He described the race as his community’s contribution to promoting grassroots sports both within Delta State and across Nigeria.

The Asagba also stated that the event would attract long-distance runners from within Nigeria and abroad.

He expressed hope that the international road race would showcase Asaba as one of the fastest-growing state capitals in Nigeria and Africa to sports enthusiasts worldwide.

Furthermore, he noted that the race would stimulate economic activities in the city while promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Asaba people on an international platform.

The competition will also offer participants the opportunity to experience the city’s significant infrastructural developments, the peaceful atmosphere, and the renowned hospitality of its people.

According to Azinge, the event is part of his broader vision to brand and elevate Asaba onto the global stage.

He added that the proposed date of 5 October, set by the Sports Promotion Committee he established, coincides with the first anniversary of his coronation.

He praised the committee for the swift progress in organising the event and expressed optimism that future editions would meet the international marathon distance standard of 42 kilometres.

In a statement, the committee chairman, Wing Commander Peter Iweze (retired), commended the Asagba for his passion and commitment to sports development.

Iweze assured that the committee is fully prepared to deliver on its mandate.

He emphasised that the road race would not only attract experienced long-distance runners to Asaba but also pave the way for the city to become a prominent sporting hub.

He confirmed the race would commence from either Stephen Keshi Stadium or St Patrick’s College, proceeding via Anwai Road, Summit Road, Mariam Babangida Way, Okpanam Road, and concluding at the Cenotaph.

Nwanze also announced that cash prizes would be awarded to all athletes upon completion of the race.

He stressed that registration for the event would be free of charge.
