Somalia will hold its presidential election on May 15, 2027, while parliamentary elections for both chambers are scheduled for April 15, the country’s electoral commission has announced.
The chairperson of the electoral body, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, announced the dates on the state broadcaster on Thursday.
The presidential election comes amid political tensions over constitutional changes approved by lawmakers in March, which potentially extended President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s tenure by one year.
Mohamud’s term was due to end in May 2026, but the changes drew criticism from opposition groups.
The government has also faced persistent security challenges from al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group that has fought Somalia’s central government for two decades.
Although the military, supported by an African Union peacekeeping mission, has made gains against the insurgents, al-Shabaab.
