Egypt Begins Transition to Electric Government Vehicles

Egypt has begun preparations to introduce electric vehicles into its government transport fleet as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s transition to sustainable mobility and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly gave the directive during a meeting with Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk, where officials reviewed plans for replacing conventional fuel-powered vehicles used by government institutions with electric alternatives.

According to the Egyptian Cabinet, the initiative forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at modernising public transport infrastructure, improving energy efficiency, strengthening environmental protection, and optimising the use of state resources.

Officials said the transition is expected to reduce government spending on petroleum imports while improving the operational efficiency of public transport services.

The programme is also designed to position public institutions as a model for implementing Egypt’s green mobility agenda.

As part of the strategy, authorities are planning to expand supporting infrastructure across the country, including the installation of fast and smart charging stations, digital monitoring systems, and enhanced cybersecurity measures in line with global safety standards.

The Ministry of Finance also presented a comparative assessment of operational costs between conventional and electric vehicles, indicating that the transition could generate significant long-term savings for the national budget.
