NAFDAC Destroys Unsafe Products Worth N22.73bn in 2026

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed regulated products worth N22.73 billion between January and August 2026 as part of efforts to remove counterfeit, unsafe and substandard goods from the Nigerian market.

The agency disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday, noting that the enforcement operations covered food, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, beverages and chemicals.

Data from NAFDAC’s Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement showed that the agency carried out 5,542 enforcement activities, conducted 213 raids, recorded 821 product seizure entries, sealed 179 premises and made 52 arrests during the eight-month period.

The directorate also opened 474 cases, concluded 295 cases and conducted 22 product destruction exercises.

A breakdown of the figures showed that the value of destroyed products rose steadily during the period, reaching N3.85 billion by the end of March before increasing to N7.15 billion in May.

In June, eight destruction exercises involving goods worth N6.40 billion raised the cumulative value of destroyed products to N13.55 billion.

July recorded the highest monthly value of destroyed goods, with four exercises involving products worth N9.03 billion, bringing the cumulative figure to N22.58 billion.

The agency conducted two additional destruction exercises in August, disposing of products valued at N157.7 million to bring the total to N22.73 billion.

Enforcement activities also increased over the period, with NAFDAC recording 1,076 activities in May and a period-high of 1,089 in July. The agency carried out another 941 activities in August.

The August figures included 28 raids, 232 product seizure entries, 20 premises sealed or closed, three arrests and 37 sanctions. The agency also concluded 69 cases, compared with 61 newly reported cases.

The data further showed that cosmetics accounted for the highest number of seizure entries, at 401, followed by drinks with 215, drugs with 112, food products with 69 and chemicals with 22.

In April, cosmetics accounted for 272 enforcement activities, while food products recorded 183. Chemicals featured prominently in May, with 396 activities, followed by cosmetics with 219.

NAFDAC said the enforcement campaign reflected its responsibility to protect public health by removing dangerous products from circulation and improving compliance with regulatory standards.

“The figures underline the fact that NAFDAC’s enforcement challenge extends beyond counterfeit medicines. Unsafe cosmetics, improperly produced beverages, adulterated food products, hazardous chemicals and other non-compliant regulated goods continue to demand regulatory attention,” the agency said.

The agency maintained that its enforcement operations were aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight and preventing unsafe and non-compliant products from reaching consumers.
