Serbia Coach Stojkovic Resigns After Defeat to Albania

Serbia’s head coach, Dragan Stojkovic, has resigned following a 1-0 home defeat to Albania in their World Cup qualifying match on Saturday.

Stojkovic, who took charge of the national team in 2021, guided Serbia to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but has endured a difficult recent run, suffering back-to-back defeats,  a 5-0 loss to England in September and Saturday’s home setback decided by Rey Manaj’s late first-half strike.

“I spoke with the president and general secretary … and I offered my resignation,” Stojkovic said after the match. “I personally did not expect this defeat … I am someone who accepts full responsibility and is solely accountable.”

The loss leaves Serbia third in Group K on seven points, behind England with 15 and Albania with 11, though the Albanians have played one more game.

The result also moves England to the brink of qualification for next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Thomas Tuchel’s side can secure their place with a win in Latvia on Tuesday.
