The Nigerian Senate has amended the 2024 South-East Development Commission Act.

This followed the presentation of the amendment bill by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC–Ekiti), during plenary on Wednesday.

The bill received accelerated consideration, having passed both first and second readings after the suspension of Senate Rule 7(1).

While presenting the bill, Senator Bamidele explained that the amendment was aimed at addressing a gap in the Act concerning the appointment of executive directors. The proposed change, he noted, was intended to promote uniformity and equity across regional development commissions.

“You may recall that we debated and passed the amendment bills for the South-South, South-West, and North-Central Development Commissions yesterday,” he stated. “However, the South-East Commission was inadvertently omitted from that process.”

He reminded the Senate of its earlier resolution that all regional development commissions should be aligned in structure and provisions, hence the need for the amendment.

Senator Bamidele therefore urged the chamber to expedite passage of the bill.

Following a clause by clause consideration, the Senate passed the amended bill.
