Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says new striker Benjamin Sesko has all the qualities to strengthen the club’s frontline, expressing confidence in unlocking the Slovenian’s full potential following his big-money move from RB Leipzig.
Sesko, 22, joined United on Saturday in a €76.5 million (£64 million) deal, with an additional €8.5 million in bonuses, and signed a contract until 2030. He will form part of a new-look attack alongside fellow summer arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Capped 41 times for Slovenia, Sesko scored 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig.
“He has the characteristics that we needed,” Amorim told reporters. “Ben is a player with all the information that we have that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! He’s really young. He’s good in the air, good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. He has the right character to be in this group, so I’m really happy to have him.”
Sesko was presented at Old Trafford before Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Fiorentina, which United won 5-4 on penalties.
“He is going to notice, from the first day and first training, that he is in the right place,”Amorim added. “He is going to a new building (at Carrington), that is also important. Things are getting better but, in the end, we need to win games.”
United, who spent around £200 million this summer following last season’s 15th-place Premier League finish – their lowest in 51 years – open their new campaign at home to Arsenal on 17 August.
