Carlos Alcaraz produced a scintillating performance on Sunday to end Jannik Sinner’s reign and reclaim the U.S. Open title, further cementing his place as the defining force of men’s tennis.

The Spaniard prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in New York, echoing his 2022 triumph that first propelled him to world number one. The victory, his sixth Grand Slam title, returned him to the top of the ATP rankings at the expense of Sinner.

At 22, Alcaraz became the second youngest player in the Open Era to capture six majors, trailing only Swedish legend Bjorn Borg. He also halted Sinner’s remarkable 27-match winning streak at hardcourt majors, dealing a blow to what had been a glittering season for the Italian.

Alcaraz, who thrilled fans at Flushing Meadows with his daring shot-making and playful golf swing celebrations, leaves New York on a 13-match winning streak with seven titles and just six losses in 2025.

“I want to start with Jannik. It’s unbelievable what you’re doing the whole season, great level during every tournament that you’re playing … I’m seeing you more than my family,” Alcaraz said during the trophy ceremony. “It’s great to share a court, to share the locker room and to share everything with you. Every achievement that I’m having is because of you, thanks to you … this one is yours.”

Under the closed skies above Arthur Ashe Stadium, Alcaraz’s trademark “sunshine tennis” was on full display. He stormed through the opening set with dazzling finesse and powerful serves, though Sinner roared back in the second, aided by his trademark consistency.

With former U.S. President Donald Trump among the spectators in the stands, the match built into another dramatic chapter of the pair’s burgeoning rivalry. Alcaraz responded to dropping a set with a blistering third, racing to a 5-0 lead before sealing it with a booming serve.

Though Sinner fought hard in the fourth, the Spaniard broke decisively in the fifth game and never looked back, clinching victory on his third match point. Celebrating in his bright pink vest, Alcaraz lifted his fists high before embracing his rival and soaking in wild applause.

For Sinner, it was another Grand Slam final disappointment against Alcaraz this year, having also lost to him in the French Open final in June. The Italian, however, denied the Spaniard at Wimbledon to claim that crown in July.

“A lot of big stages and matches we’ve played this season,” Sinner said afterwards. “I tried my best today, I couldn’t do more.”

The result leaves Alcaraz with a 10–5 career record against Sinner and tightens their rivalry as the dominant storyline of men’s tennis.
