Plateau Lawmaker Presents Bill to Establish College of Nursing

Hon. Daniel Nanbol Listick  (LP, Langtang North Central) has presented a bill before the Plateau State House of Assembly seeking the establishment of a College of Nursing in Langtang.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Listick explained that the bill aims to create a conducive environment for scientific research and the publication of findings in health-related fields. It also seeks to promote collaboration with relevant institutions within and outside Nigeria in pursuit of the college’s objectives.

He stated that the proposed institution would comprise the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Medical Laboratory Science, School of Community Health, School of Environmental Health, and the School of Health Information Management/Biostatistics.

In addition, it would include the School of Pharmacy Technician, School of Imaging Science, and any other schools as may be established from time to time by the college’s Governing Council.

According to Listick, the purpose of the bill is to provide education and training in nursing, health sciences, and technology, offering degrees, Higher National Diplomas (HND), National Diplomas (ND), and other recognised qualifications.

He added that the bill also aims to encourage research and innovation in nursing and health sciences, with a view to addressing the healthcare needs of Plateau State and the nation more broadly.

“This initiative would not only offer health education and services but also contribute to scientific research and create an enabling environment for the publication of textbooks, academic materials, and innovations,” he said.

He noted that the college would be administered by a Governing Council responsible for policy formulation, appointments, promotions, and financial management.

Listick further explained that funding for the proposed college would come from annual government subventions, with tuition fees to be determined by the Governing Council.

If passed into law and assented to, he said, the bill would pave the way for the establishment of the Tim Tali College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology, a world-class institution dedicated to providing quality education and producing skilled professionals in healthcare and technology.
