In a significant development surrounding the death of Nigerian Afrobeat star Mohbad, forensic pathologist Dr. Uwom Eze testified that the late musician did not die from drug abuse.

This revelation was made during a coroner’s court session on April 25, 2025, where Dr. Eze presented the findings from a second autopsy and toxicology analysis.

According to Dr. Eze, the substances found in Mohbad’s system were not illicit drugs, but regulated doses of antihistamines, commonly used to treat allergy symptoms.

“The substances found in his system were not harmful doses, nor were they psychotropic drugs,” Dr. Eze stated. He further clarified that there was no indication of poisoning, significant blood loss, or trauma, suggesting instead that Mohbad may have died due to an allergic reaction to an injected substance, which led to multiple organ failure.

Dr. Eze described the cause of death as a “Medical misadventure,” rather than the result of drug abuse. He pointed out that this severe allergic reaction could have been triggered by an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse shortly before Mohbad’s sudden death on September 12, 2023.

The pathologist’s findings have shifted the focus away from speculations about drug use, providing a clearer understanding of the tragic incident.

“While initial reports suggested drug abuse as a possible cause of death, our findings show that Mohbad’s system contained antihistamines, not drugs that would have caused a fatal overdose,” Dr. Eze emphasised.

This testimony has been pivotal in the ongoing investigation, as Mohbad’s body was exhumed for a second autopsy after the initial one could not determine the cause of death due to decomposition. Subsequent toxicology tests revealed the presence of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, though not in lethal concentrations.

The coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death has been adjourned, with the final ruling expected soon. The case has sparked widespread attention, especially among the late musician’s fans and the wider entertainment community, as it brings closure to the many questions surrounding his untimely demise.

The pathologist’s testimony marks a significant turn in the investigation, which initially pointed to drug abuse as a contributing factor. However, the results from Dr. Eze’s expert analysis now suggest that Mohbad’s death was linked to a rare allergic reaction, sparking debates about the role of healthcare practices and the responsibility of medical professionals in such cases.

The coroner’s inquest will continue to gather evidence, with the final ruling eagerly awaited.
