Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has commended the critical role of dockworkers, describing their contributions as central to Nigeria’s maritime development.
Oyetola made the remarks during the 2025 Day of the Dockworkers in Lagos, organised by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC). The event was held under the theme “Safe Port, Safe Ship” to emphasise the importance of safe working conditions and enhanced welfare for dockworkers while showcasing government initiatives to improve safety standards.
Represented by NIMASA Director-General Dr Dayo Mobereola, the minister said, “Today reminds us that our dockworkers are vital to creating a maritime industry where safety is assured and productivity increases. As dockworkers, you are the first link in the trade chain that fuels our economy and turns the potential of the blue economy into real national growth.”
Oyetola highlighted government programmes aimed at improving working conditions, including the provision of modern protective equipment for dockworkers and riverine transport operators, safety training, enhanced emergency response capabilities, and professional development schemes.
Francis Bunu, President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), praised the Minister and agencies under his supervision for their commitment to dockworkers’ welfare. “It is a great honour to celebrate the 3rd edition of Dockworkers Day 2025. We sincerely thank NIMASA, terminal operators, stevedores, and all maritime stakeholders for recognising the vital role of dockworkers in sustaining our nation’s maritime industry,” he said.
In a goodwill message, Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, represented by Mr Emmanuel Igbinosun, urged stakeholders to uphold safe working environments and appropriate remuneration for dockworkers in line with International Labour Organisation standards.
Representatives from the NPA, NSC, Nigerian Association of Stevedoring Operators (NASO), and Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) also commended dockworkers and pledged continued support for safer working conditions and welfare enhancements.
The Day of the Dockworker aims to recognise the important, often hazardous work of dockworkers while raising awareness about their working conditions.
