Tragedy struck on Wednesday, 12 June 2025, when Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of over 290 passengers and crew members on board.
The aircraft, a Boeing 777, was en route to London Heathrow when it reportedly suffered a critical systems failure mid-air. Eyewitnesses said they saw flames erupt from one of the engines moments before the aircraft nosedived into an open field on the outskirts of the city, erupting into a massive fireball on impact.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters, medical personnel, and security agencies, rushed to the scene. Despite swift efforts, authorities confirmed that there were no survivors. The crash site has since been cordoned off, and recovery operations are ongoing under challenging conditions.

The Indian government has declared a day of national mourning in honour of the victims, with flags flown at half-mast across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “a monumental tragedy” and pledged full support to the families of the victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who lost loved ones in this horrific crash,” he said in a statement.
Air India, the country’s flagship carrier, also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. “We are heartbroken by this tragedy and are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the incident,” the airline said in a press release. A full passenger manifest has not yet been made public, pending notification of next of kin.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation into the crash, with the black box and cockpit voice recorder already recovered from the wreckage. A team from Boeing and international aviation safety experts is expected to join the probe in the coming days.
Reactions have continued to pour in from around the world. The Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, offered condolences to India, expressing solidarity in this time of grief. Although no Nigerian national was reported on board, the Nigerian High Commission in New Delhi is liaising with Indian authorities for confirmation and any necessary consular assistance.
This disaster marks one of the deadliest aviation incidents in recent Indian history and has reignited calls for stricter safety regulations and aircraft maintenance protocols across the global aviation industry.
As the investigation proceeds, families of the victims are being offered psychological support and assistance in arrangements for the identification and repatriation of remains.
