The Federal Government has called on the media to take the lead in promoting narratives that highlight Nigeria’s democratic achievements and progress.

President Bola Tinubu made this call during the 70th Anniversary Gala/Award Night and Book Presentation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), held in Abuja on Saturday.

Tinubu, who was the Special Guest of Honour, was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who served as the Chief Host.

According to the President, his relationship with the Nigerian press is unmatched in the history of the Nigerian presidency.

He urged the media to leverage its platform to promote national unity, build public trust, and consolidate democratic governance.

“As we mark the 26 years of continuous democratic governance in Nigeria, the media must champion the narratives that reflect the country’s democratic gains.
“Stories of institutional reforms, infrastructural development, citizen engagement, and socio-economic advancement.
“By constructively spotlighting these milestones, the media not only honours the sacrifices that birthed the nation’s democracy but also helps to promote national cohesion and public trust in democratic institutions.
“In doing so, the media solidifies its role as a key pillar in sustaining and deepening Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he said.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s firm commitment to press freedom, emphasising that a vibrant and responsible media is essential to democratic stability in Nigeria.

He also noted ongoing efforts to support ethical journalism through a strategic partnership with UNESCO, aimed at establishing a Category-2 Institute for Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Abuja.

While acknowledging that the media’s role includes holding government accountable, Tinubu expressed a desire for stronger collaboration between the media and government in advancing national goals.

“Even as you hold us to account as government, we welcome this; there is also room to see us as close partners, and active co-creators along with you, [of the] peace, security, and prosperity that our great nation deserves,” he said.

The President congratulated the NUJ on its 70th anniversary and commended the union for preserving its legacy through the launch of a commemorative book.

“I am of the strong view that the media profession must always remember to tell its own stories and shape its narratives; no one else will do it for us,” he stated.

Awards were presented to several state governors including those of Kano, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Ondo, Borno, Imo, Akwa Ibom, and Oyo.

Honours were also extended to former NUJ presidents and leaders of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

A highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a book titled “Bleeding Ink”, authored by the immediate past National Secretary of the NUJ, Shu’aibu Leman.
