The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has reiterated its dedication to deepening tourism cooperation with the Republic of The Gambia.
This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by a four-member delegation from The Gambia, led by Hon. Yakuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council in the country’s Western Region.
The delegation was received by Mr Richard Ovie Esewhaye, Director overseeing the Office of the Director General, NTDA, alongside senior management staff at the Authority’s headquarters in Abuja.
Hon. Darboe, describing The Gambia as Nigeria’s “37th state” due to the strong historical ties between both countries, stated that tourism remains the cornerstone of the Gambian economy. He noted that the purpose of the visit was to showcase The Gambia’s tourism potential to Nigerian stakeholders.
Citing the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol, Darboe emphasised the mutual benefits of cultural exchange and regional tourism cooperation, calling on the NTDA to promote The Gambia among Nigerian travel destinations.

In his remarks, Mr Esewhaye welcomed the delegation and commended the long-standing relationship between the NTDA and the Gambia Tourism Board. He recalled previous engagements, including interactions with the Gambia Investment Forum, and stressed the need to translate agreements into measurable outcomes.
“Despite its small size, The Gambia has made significant strides in tourism. Nigeria stands to learn from its success, particularly in revenue generation, cultural promotion, and tourism capacity development,” he said, while proposing the establishment
Also speaking, NTDA’s Director of Special Duties, Mr F.O. Anumba, highlighted the absence of direct air connectivity between the two countries as a barrier to enhanced tourism cooperation. He urged the consideration of direct flight routes to facilitate greater tourist exchange.
The visit concluded with Hon. Darboe presenting an Outstanding Leadership and Humanitarian Award to Mr Esewhaye in recognition of his efforts in promoting tourism and regional collaboration.
