Northern Governors Postpone Kaduna Security Summit Amid Senate Dialogue

The 19 governors from Nigeria’s northern states, under the Northern Governors Forum (NGF), have postponed their planned security summit originally scheduled for 29 November in Kaduna.

The meeting was intended to address the escalating wave of terrorist violence across the region, particularly recent attacks and kidnappings in Niger, Kebbi, and Kwara states.

The postponement is due to a conflicting engagement: the seven governors from the north-west zone are participating in a dedicated security dialogue with the Senate Committee on Security. The forum focuses on the zone’s ongoing challenges, including banditry and terrorism, and aims to strengthen cooperation between state authorities and federal security forces through improved intelligence sharing and faster operational responses.

The now-postponed Kaduna summit had been publicized earlier in the week by Peter Ahemba, senior special assistant on public affairs to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule. Ahemba described the event as a platform for forging a shared security roadmap and a unified action plan, with traditional leaders also expected to attend.

“The meeting aims to develop a unified approach to tackling security concerns affecting the region and discuss the way forward on security matters,” he said.

“It is the duty of citizens to help deal with security threats in our country and state. Therefore, citizens must do well by providing security agencies with relevant information about individuals with criminal tendencies.”

The Northern Governors Forum said a new date for the Kaduna summit will be announced once the current Senate engagement concludes, signalling continued efforts to coordinate regional security strategies.
