Nollywood has continued its remarkable growth, with cinema revenues hitting an impressive ₦3.48 billion in the first quarter of 2025, according to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).
This amount, recorded between 1 January and 31 March, represents a 54.7% increase from the ₦2.25 billion earned in the same period of 2024.
Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the 2025 revenue shows a staggering 132% rise, reflecting Nollywood’s expanding cultural and commercial impact, alongside growing demand for cinema experiences nationwide.
Notably, Q1 2024 also saw significant growth, up 46% from the ₦1.5 billion recorded in Q1 2023. This steady year-on-year increase points to a maturing market, supported by a rising number of cinema screens, better distribution networks, and a steady stream of engaging local content.
The sector’s recovery is further evident in audience figures. CEAN reported total admissions of 661,801 in Q1 2025, a 10.9% increase from 596,609 ticket sales in Q1 2024. Compared with 620,477 admissions in Q1 2023, this marks a 6.7% rise, indicating sustained public interest and improved access to cinemas across Nigeria.
What’s Driving the Growth?
A combination of strong Nigerian productions and major international releases has boosted the industry’s momentum. Local filmmakers continue to compete effectively with global studios, with several homegrown titles topping the charts.
Funke Akindele, actress and filmmaker, maintained her box office dominance following the success of A Tribe Called Judah in Q1 2024, delivering another hit in 2025. Rising star Timini Egbuson solidified his position as a leading actor, while veteran producer Toyin Abraham contributed with another acclaimed release, broadening Nollywood’s reach across diverse audiences.
