The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze and thunderstorms across various parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, urging citizens to take safety precautions.
NiMet’s weather outlook, released Sunday in Abuja, forecast slight dust haze over Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, and parts of Kaduna States on Monday, while other northern areas are expected to experience sunny conditions.
The agency said isolated thunderstorms may develop in parts of southern Taraba in the afternoon and evening, with sunny skies and occasional clouds dominating the central region. Later in the day, thunderstorms are also expected over parts of Benue and Kogi States, as the southern region experiences generally cloudy conditions with possible light morning rainfall.
Moderate rainfall is forecast for parts of Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos States by Monday evening, with isolated thunderstorms likely across Ondo, Edo, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta States.
For Tuesday, NiMet anticipates a sunny and hazy northern region, isolated thunderstorms over southern Taraba, and sunny conditions with occasional clouds in central states, with possible afternoon storms in Kogi, Benue, and Kwara. Moderate rainfall may occur in Ogun, Edo, Enugu, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta States.
On Wednesday, sunny skies are expected in the north, with sunny conditions and cloud patches across the central region. Isolated thunderstorms with light rain are likely in Kwara, Benue, and Kogi States, while moderate thunderstorms may develop in Abia, Anambra, Imo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States later in the day.
NiMet warned that dust particles could reduce visibility and air quality in northern states. Residents with asthma or respiratory conditions were advised to remain indoors during periods of heavy haze. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously, while airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates to avoid delays.
