NiMet Forecasts 3-day Rain, Thunderstorms from Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rains across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, forecasts morning thunderstorms on Monday over the northern region, with moderate rains expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

Thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated later in the day over parts of Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa States.

The agency also predicts a high likelihood of flooding in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto States during the forecast period.

For the Central Region, there are prospects of light rain over parts of Niger State during the morning.

In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with light rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi States. There is a high possibility of flooding in parts of Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger States during this period.

NiMet forecasts cloudy skies over the southern region, with intermittent light rains affecting parts of Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during the morning. Later in the day, moderate rains are expected over parts of Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.

The agency warns of a high likelihood of flooding in parts of Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during the forecast period.

For Tuesday, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, and Kaduna States. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Gombe States in the afternoon and evening.

In the central region, light rains are forecasted for parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi States during the morning, followed by thunderstorms with light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Kwara States later in the day.

NiMet anticipates cloudy skies in the southern region, with light rains affecting parts of Oyo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Lagos, and Bayelsa States in the morning. Rains are expected to continue over most parts of the region later in the day.

For Wednesday, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecasted for the entire region during the afternoon and evening.

Light rains are anticipated over parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau States in the central region during the morning, with thunderstorms and light rains expected across the entire region later in the day.

In the southern region, light rains are expected over parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa States during the morning, with continuous rain over most parts of the region in the afternoon or evening.

NiMet advises:

  • Driving under heavy rain should be avoided.

  • States with a high risk of flash floods should activate their emergency response systems immediately.

  • To prevent leaching of nutrients, farmers should refrain from applying fertilizers and pesticides right before the rains.

  • Warm clothing should be provided for vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures.

  • Loose objects should be secured to avoid collisions.

  • Electrical appliances should be disconnected from sockets.

  • Avoid tall trees to reduce the risk of being affected by falling branches or broken trees.

NiMet also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from the agency for effective planning in their operations. The agency encourages residents to stay informed by visiting NiMet’s website for regular weather updates.
