The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a major step toward reducing Nigeria’s reliance on petrol and diesel by expanding access to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cheaper and cleaner alternative.
In a landmark development, the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has concluded an agreement with China’s Endurance Group to establish 500 CNG refuelling stations across the country over the next three years.
Speaking after the Abuja meeting, MDGIF Executive Director Mr. Oluwole Adama explained that the project will be driven through a government-supported Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called the Compressed Natural Gas Auto Mobility Infrastructure Company (CAM InfraCo). The SPV is designed to accelerate nationwide deployment of CNG stations efficiently, avoiding bureaucratic delays.
“This initiative will provide ordinary Nigerians with more accessible, affordable, and cleaner fuel options, particularly at a time when global petrol prices remain high,” Mr. Adama said.

CAM InfraCo’s key roles under the agreement include:
-
Building 500 integrated CNG stations nationwide
-
Developing LCNG gas supply systems
-
Providing CNG and LNG trucks to transport gas to areas without pipelines
-
Creating a virtual pipeline network covering every state in the country
The rollout is expected to make CNG widely available in both urban and rural areas, reducing transport costs for families and businesses while promoting cleaner energy.
For years, Nigeria’s CNG projects were small and scattered, limiting impact. This agreement represents a coordinated national approach, signalling a shift from planning to full-scale execution.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
-
Creation of thousands of new jobs
-
Encouragement of local manufacturing of gas equipment
-
Support for small businesses and transport operators
-
Reduction in petrol imports
-
Lower nationwide carbon emissions
With over N287 billion already invested in gas infrastructure by MDGIF, the partnership places CNG at the centre of Nigeria’s energy transition and economic growth, highlighting the Tinubu administration’s commitment to practical reforms that directly improve citizens’ lives.
This initiative is set to transform Nigeria’s transport fuel landscape, offering cleaner, affordable mobility while strengthening energy security and supporting local industry.
