President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Brazil, highlighting the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme as a cornerstone of the partnership aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector.
Receiving the Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, President Tinubu described the Green Imperative as a flagship initiative under Nigeria’s renewed engagement with Brazil. The project, he said, represents a major step in leveraging technology and strategic capacity-building to overhaul Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

“The landmark $1 billion Green Imperative Programme, a bilateral agricultural mechanisation initiative led by Nigeria’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in partnership with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sector actors, exemplifies the depth of our renewed partnership,” President Tinubu stated on his official X handle, @officialABAT.
He noted that the initiative will facilitate the transfer of agricultural technology, strengthen local expertise, and establish service centres across the country to boost productivity and food security.

Accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu said the high-level visit from the Brazilian delegation marked a shift from diplomatic rhetoric to practical action focused on mutual economic and developmental goals.
“Our engagement reaffirmed the enduring ties between Nigeria and Brazil two vibrant democracies bound by shared values, historical links, and a common vision for inclusive and people-driven progress,” he added.
The President further outlined key areas of bilateral cooperation, including agribusiness, trade and industrialisation, renewable energy, healthcare delivery, defence, cultural exchange, and innovation.
He also confirmed Nigeria’s readiness to participate actively in the COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil, describing it as a platform to enhance cooperation on sustainability, energy transition, and climate resilience.
“As we prepare for COP30, both nations are poised to strengthen collaboration on climate action and sustainable development,” he said.
Tinubu commended the expanding scope of Nigeria–Brazil relations, now encompassing sectors such as renewable energy and the creative economy. He stressed that the partnership is grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to delivering tangible outcomes for both nations.
“Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and results-driven diplomacy,” the President said.
He concluded by echoing a Portuguese expression of solidarity: “As our Brazilian friends say, ‘Juntos somos mais fortes’ together we are stronger.”
