Nestlé Partners with FBRA to Boost Environmental Sustainability

Nestlé Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing sustainable waste management practices through a strategic partnership with the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), Nigeria’s first Producer Responsibility Organisation for the food and beverage industry.

Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria, described the collaboration as carefully planned and impactful.

“Though as producers we compete commercially, we unite as collaborators when it comes to fulfilling shared environmental responsibilities,” she said.

“While FBRA may not yet be a household name, its influence is evident in cleaner communities and the empowerment of waste collectors, especially in Lagos State,” she added.

According to Uwadoka, the partnership seeks to make a tangible difference in environmental management through shared accountability.

Nestlé Nigeria was among FBRA’s founding members and has consistently remained one of its most active supporters and advocates.

Founded in 2018, FBRA was established to deliver innovative programmes that protect the environment, stimulate innovation, create employment, and generate entrepreneurial opportunities for repurposing packaging waste, while also mitigating reputational and regulatory risks for its members.

The alliance operates under Nigeria’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy, introduced in 2014 through the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

The EPR policy was launched in response to growing concerns over the volume of waste generated nationwide, at a time when Nigeria’s population, projected by the United Nations Population Fund to exceed 237 million by 2025, continues to rise.

The World Bank reports that over 32 million tonnes of solid waste are produced annually in Nigeria, creating increased pressure on local authorities and private stakeholders to establish sustainable waste management systems.

Since its inception, FBRA has grown from four founding members to a robust alliance of 49 organisations as of November 2025, collectively driving the recovery, recycling, and circular management of post-consumer packaging waste.

The alliance has successfully recovered over 100,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste, transforming waste from a problem into a valuable resource within Nigeria’s circular economy.

Through FBRA’s framework, Nestlé Nigeria and other producers have strengthened the waste value chain, ensuring that plastics are collected, recycled, and reintegrated into production cycles.
