The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET, forecasted that severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and moderate rainfall are currently affecting parts of Borno, Adamawa, Plateau, and several states in Nigeria’s South-East, raising concerns over potential disruptions and safety risks.
According to the latest weather update, the storm system is expected to intensify and expand its reach within the next one to six hours, impacting additional states across the country.
States likely to be affected include Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, and Lagos.
The developing weather conditions could result in reduced visibility, localised flooding, and damage to unsecured property, particularly in areas prone to heavy winds.

NiMet urges residents and stakeholders to take precautionary measures to minimise risks associated with the storms.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving in rainy conditions due to slippery roads and poor visibility.
Farmers are cautioned against applying fertilisers or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching and reduced effectiveness. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items to avoid damage or injury caused by strong winds.
NiMet also recommend disconnecting electrical appliances during storms to prevent damage from potential power surges. Residents are further advised to avoid sheltering under tall trees, which may pose a risk due to falling branches or uprooting.
Airline operators have been specifically advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency for better operational planning and safety
