Kano Launches 5.5m Tree Initiative to Fight Desertification

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has flagged off the distribution of 5.5 million tree seedlings across the state as part of a major initiative to combat desert encroachment and promote environmental sustainability.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa.

Governor Yusuf stated that all 44 local government areas in the state would receive an allocation of the seedlings, which will be further distributed to schools, communities, religious centres, and other institutions.

He also directed local government chairmen to establish tree planting committees, with a mandate to ensure that trees are planted in schools, places of worship, and along major roads and streets to foster a greener, cleaner environment.

The governor further highlighted the state’s wider environmental restoration agenda, which includes the reclamation of over 250,000 hectares of land under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
