The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have reiterated the importance of enhancing existing collaboration in the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
This formed the core of discussions during a meeting held on Friday in Abuja between the Chairman of NDLEA, retired Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, and the DEA Country Attaché to Nigeria, Ms Daphne Morrison.
In a statement issued by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Ms Morrison expressed appreciation for the longstanding cooperation between the two agencies.
Having recently assumed her post in Nigeria, Morrison stated, “I made it a priority to meet with you so that we can continue our collaborative efforts. Thank you for your support over the years. We’re ready to move forward.”
She acknowledged the successful working relationship with her predecessor and voiced her enthusiasm for renewed joint efforts. “I know you worked well with the previous Country Attaché, and I’m keen to resume that partnership and achieve significant progress together.”
Morrison also noted that plans were underway to organise additional training sessions for personnel in NDLEA’s Special Operations Units. She added that the DEA looked forward to a series of joint operations in areas of mutual interest already identified.

In his remarks, Marwa commended the strong ties established with previous DEA officials, expressing confidence in continued cooperation.
“They were extremely supportive, and I have no doubt that our collaboration with you will be equally productive, if not better,” he said.
Marwa highlighted the agency’s recent growth in workforce capacity and structural expansion, which he attributed to notable achievements in both drug supply suppression and demand reduction.
He also acknowledged DEA’s longstanding support in the areas of equipment, training, and joint operations, expressing optimism for continued assistance.
“We would certainly welcome further support, but as this is your first visit, I won’t overwhelm you with a list of requests. I simply wish to express our appreciation for all the assistance we’ve received so far,” he concluded.
