Local flight operations are expected to resume at the upgraded Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, by the end of the year.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.

Oyelade stated that efforts are well underway to upgrade the airport to international standards, with full international operations expected to commence in 2026.

He explained that the upgrade includes extending the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and widening it from 45 to 60 metres to accommodate wide-body aircraft for international flights.

The commissioner further noted that the airfield lighting has been upgraded to CAT C standard, while firefighting capabilities have also been enhanced to ensure a high level of safety.

He added that necessary facilities for customs, immigration, and other key agencies are being put in place to meet international aviation requirements.

According to Oyelade, the ongoing work on the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads currently at 55% completion is expected to be concluded before the end of the year. Local flight services will resume thereafter, subject to approval by the relevant regulatory authorities.
