Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have officially confirmed a contract extension for Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka, reinforcing their commitment to retaining key talents ahead of the new season.

Although details of the contract duration were not disclosed, the club announced on Wednesday that Onyeka had signed a new deal following a successful loan spell and impressive performances that helped bolster Leverkusen’s midfield depth.

The 26-year-old, who joined Leverkusen on loan from Premier League side Brentford during the second half of last season, made a significant impact under coach Xabi Alonso, contributing to the team’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga campaign.

Club sporting director Simon Rolfes described Onyeka as “a player with tremendous energy, tactical discipline, and a winning mentality,” adding that the decision to extend his stay was based on his seamless integration and consistent displays.

Onyeka, who has previously featured for FC Midtjylland in Denmark and Brentford in England, expressed delight at continuing his journey in Germany. “I’m grateful for the trust the club has shown in me. Being part of this special team and historic season was an honour, and I’m excited for what lies ahead,” he said.

The Super Eagles international will now look to cement his place in Alonso’s plans as Leverkusen prepare for domestic title defence and Champions League football next season.
