The Lagos State Government has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs) across the state from 1 July 2025, marking a significant step in its environmental protection efforts.

In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @followlasg, the government noted that the decision follows 18 months of sustained dialogue, stakeholder engagement, and strategic transition planning with marketers and manufacturers.

This is about environmental responsibility,” the statement read. What is unacceptable elsewhere cannot become standard in Lagos. We must protect our future and do what is right for the greater good.”

The enforcement of the SUPs ban comes after similar efforts to eliminate styrofoam products, which the government described as a successful campaign driven by accountability and public cooperation.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment during a recent courtesy visit by the management of TETRA PAK West Africa Limited, led by Managing Director Mr Haithem Debbiche, where the transition plans were reiterated.

Officials stressed that the move is not aimed at political point-scoring but reflects a clear intent to secure a cleaner, healthier environment for all Lagosians. They urged residents, businesses, and stakeholders to comply with the ban, warning that enforcement will be firm and uncompromising.

A cleaner, healthier Lagos is within reach if we all play our part,” the statement concluded.
