The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Mr Miller Dantawaye, has urged senior officers to remain focused, disciplined, and innovative in their security operations across the state.

He made the call on Wednesday during a command-wide strategic conference held at the Police Headquarters in Lokoja.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, Dantawaye stressed the importance of professionalism, operational efficiency, accountability, and intelligence-led policing.

“As Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders, you must maintain discipline, uphold professionalism, ensure precision in patrol formations, exhibit civility in public engagement, and implement intelligence-driven operations,” he said.

He encouraged officers to move away from reactive policing and embrace preventive, community-oriented approaches.

The Commissioner warned against arbitrary arrests, the prolonged detention of suspects over minor offences, and the abuse of police authority particularly at checkpoints and other public spaces.

Reiterating the Inspector General of Police’s directive, he made it clear that any division found in breach of the rules would be sanctioned.

Dantawaye emphasised the need for strict enforcement of discipline across all command levels, describing discipline as the bedrock of effective policing.

He also highlighted the significance of tactical coordination, proper conduct during operations, and the urgent need to restore public confidence through ethical law enforcement.

He charged Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to take personal responsibility for their units’ performance, noting that there would be continuous unannounced visits to ensure compliance with professional standards.

As part of the conference, Dr Joe Wealth, a renewable energy specialist from AFP Consult, delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Solar Power in Strengthening Security Infrastructure.”

He advocated for the adoption of solar-powered street lighting and backup systems at police stations, especially those in remote and high-risk locations, arguing that constant visibility could help reduce crime and improve operational efficiency.

The conference concluded with a renewed resolve among senior officers to entrench professionalism and discipline in all aspects of policing.
