The Anambra State Executive Council has approved the creation of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) to improve electricity supply in the state.

This follows the recent passage of the Anambra State Electricity Law, signed by Governor Charles Soludo, which empowers the state to generate electricity and grant licences to investors interested in power generation within Anambra.

Julius Chukwuemeka, the State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, described the council’s approval as a significant move in the government’s strategic investment in electricity generation. He explained that ASERC will oversee electricity generation to ensure a reliable and consistent power supply across the state.

Commissioner Chukwuemeka highlighted that the establishment of ASERC demonstrates Governor Soludo’s dedication to economic growth. “A dependable power supply is essential to driving the state’s industrial revolution,” he said.

The commission will be responsible for enforcing electricity policies, encouraging private sector involvement, and attracting investment to stimulate infrastructural development throughout Anambra.

This initiative builds on recent achievements, such as the Memorandum of Understanding between the Anambra State government and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which has facilitated the local production of prepaid electricity meters in Ozubulu, helping to address the metering deficit.

Additionally, under Governor Soludo’s leadership, hundreds of transformers have been distributed to underserved communities in the state.

Other key projects include plans to establish Nigeria’s first electricity market and the construction of a new substation at the Igbariam campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).

In line with the governor’s clean and green agenda, solar power systems have also been installed in several government buildings and water facilities across Anambra, providing an environmentally friendly alternative energy source.
