Gennaro Gattuso has been named the new head coach of the Italy national football team, succeeding Luciano Spalletti, who was relieved of his duties following Italy’s 3–0 defeat to Norway in their opening 2026 World Cup qualifier.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed the appointment on Saturday, noting that Gattuso, a former World Cup-winning midfielder, would take charge with immediate effect. He has reportedly signed a one-year contract aimed at stabilising the team’s performance and securing qualification for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Gattuso, 47, brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously managed several clubs including AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille, and, most recently, Hajduk Split. He was part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad and is widely regarded as a passionate and tenacious figure in Italian football.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina praised the appointment, stating:

“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football the blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivations, his professionalism, and his experience will be fundamental in guiding the national team through its upcoming challenges.”

Spalletti’s departure was confirmed just one day before Italy’s 2–0 friendly victory over Moldova, marking a swift end to a tenure that lasted less than two years. The former Napoli coach had taken charge in August 2023 and led Italy through a transitional period, including qualification for UEFA Euro 2024.

Italy currently sit third in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers and are set to face Estonia in Bergamo on 5 September, followed by a crucial fixture against Israel three days later.

Gattuso will be officially unveiled as Italy’s head coach at a press conference in Rome on Thursday. His immediate task will be to revitalise the squad’s spirit and restore confidence among supporters after a string of underwhelming performances.
