The new Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, on Wednesday sealed the X-ray section of the Poly General Hospital located in Asata, in the heart of the state capital.
Prof. Ugwu took the action during an on-the-spot inspection conducted alongside a team from the Ministry of Health, after identifying the unit as engaging in unsafe practices and breaching regulatory standards.
The commissioner explained that the decision was necessary to protect patients, staff, and the surrounding community from potential hazards linked to the improper handling and operation of radiological equipment.
“The safety of our citizens is non-negotiable. Any health facility operating without meeting the required safety and operational standards will face immediate sanctions,” he said.

He added that the inspection revealed several violations, including the absence of proper radiation shielding and failure to adhere to essential safety protocols.
“This action will serve as a clear warning, as Governor Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery in the state,” he stated.
Prof. Ugwu assured the public that the facility would be allowed to resume its X-ray services only after all violations are rectified and a follow-up inspection is successfully conducted by the Ministry of Health.
