OpenAI Seeks Dismissal of Apple Trade Secrets Lawsuit

OpenAI has asked a United States judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Apple, rejecting allegations that it misappropriated the iPhone maker’s trade secrets to accelerate its expansion into consumer hardware.

In a court filing on Wednesday, OpenAI denied any wrongdoing, insisting it had no interest in using Apple’s confidential information.

The artificial intelligence company said it was developing products that were fundamentally different from Apple’s and had no need for the technology giant’s proprietary trade secrets.

“OpenAI has no use, need or desire for Apple’s trade secrets. OpenAI is building something entirely new and different from anything at Apple,” the company said in its filing.

OpenAI also defended its recruitment practices, saying it was committed to hiring talented engineers, developers and inventors, many of whom had chosen to leave Apple voluntarily to work on its artificial intelligence projects.

Apple filed the lawsuit in July, accusing OpenAI and two former Apple employees of orchestrating a coordinated effort to obtain and exploit the company’s confidential information through former staff, recruitment activities and supplier relationships.

The iPhone maker alleges the information was intended to strengthen OpenAI’s growing ambitions in the consumer hardware market.
