The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr Blessing Agbebaku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the development initiatives of Governor Monday Okpebholo as his primary motivation.

Mr Agbebaku, who has served as Speaker since 16 June 2023 under the PDP, made the switch alongside two fellow PDP legislators, Mr Yekini Idiaye (Akoko-Edo I) and Mr Fada Sunday Igbiremonlen (Esan Central). Their defection brings the APC’s representation in the state assembly to 18, reducing the PDP’s seats to six.

Receiving the new members, APC National Chairman Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, represented by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, welcomed them into the fold and assured them of fairness and inclusivity. Senator Bashiru described the defection as a major boost to the APC’s political consolidation in Edo, noting that the party was now more unified and strategically positioned.

He commended Governor Okpebholo for prioritising good governance, particularly the timely payment of salaries and the execution of key infrastructure projects, including road construction in Ekpoma.

Governor Okpebholo, in his remarks, reiterated his administration’s commitment to rapid development, supported by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and federal government interventions. He highlighted progress in areas such as transportation, education, youth employment, agriculture, and food security.

He added that Edo would play a leading role in rallying support for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. “We will lead the South-South in backing Mr President. With our structure and energy, the mission begins here in Edo,” he affirmed.

Former governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, described Agbebaku’s return as a homecoming, noting his foundational contributions to the APC’s establishment in Edo.

Leader of the House of Representatives, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, also welcomed the Speaker’s move, describing it as a strategic decision that would enhance political stability in Owan and strengthen the APC’s position in Edo North. He said the defection marked a turning point in the party’s effort to rebuild the state after the alleged mismanagement under the previous administration.

“This is a major win for the APC in Owan West and a testament to our growing influence and unity across the state,” Prof Ihonvbere added.
