Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved an increase in the monthly salaries and allowances of newly recruited medical doctors from ₦150,000 to ₦500,000.
The governor made the announcement on Monday in Abakaliki during the launch of the state’s health activation programme, which precedes the implementation of the Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) scheme. He also commissioned hospital equipment worth several billion naira.
Nwifuru said the pay rise was necessary to enhance doctors’ performance and support their families.
“I came across an analysis on social media regarding the inadequacy of the ₦150,000 salaries and allowances for doctors. After distributing questionnaires, I confirmed the analysis was accurate and required prompt action,” he said.
He noted the rising cost of living, particularly for doctors posted to remote areas such as Ivo Local Government Area, where fuel expenses are high.
“A doctor working in Ivo, for example, requires about 20 litres of fuel daily. Multiply that by 28 days, and you’ll understand the financial burden,” the governor said.
Reflecting on the demands of the medical profession, Nwifuru revealed that he once aspired to be a doctor but abandoned the path due to difficulties with organic chemistry.
“Doctors deserve more. I’ve now approved a minimum monthly salary of ₦500,000 for newly recruited doctors,” he stated.

The governor encouraged doctors to make use of accommodation provided in various local government areas to help minimise their living expenses. He also directed the Commissioner for Health to ensure speedy completion of the doctors’ quarters and ensure they are habitable.
“Living in their assigned localities will help doctors reduce costs and stay focused without family-related distractions,” he added.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, commended the governor for procuring advanced medical equipment, assuring that they would be properly utilised.
“The availability of this equipment will boost the impact of our modern health facilities and support a motivated healthcare workforce,” he said.
Mrs Jioke Chinwendu, Executive Secretary of the State Drug Management Agency, also pledged the agency’s commitment to ensuring a steady supply of essential drugs across Ebonyi’s health facilities.
