Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging on Monday. Nwachukwu was convicted of culpable homicide, which led to the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

The judge stated that the prosecution had successfully met the legal burden of proof, leading to the defendant’s conviction. Nwachukwu had been arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the Federal Government. He faced 23 charges, including culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and more.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses. The prosecution also submitted 25 documents as exhibits. The defendant, in his defence, testified and called four additional witnesses, also presenting four exhibits.

Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, appealed for leniency, while prosecution counsel Mrs. Aderonke Imala urged the court to enforce the law strictly.

In addition to the death sentence for culpable homicide, the court sentenced Nwachukwu to two years’ imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. He was sentenced to six months on Count 10, three years on Count 11, and fined N500,000 and N200,000 on Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
