Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has confirmed that he was recently invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his involvement in the public spraying of both local and foreign currencies at a social function.

In a post shared via his Instagram page, AY expressed gratitude for how the matter was handled, revealing that the EFCC had granted him a pardon after determining that the funds in question were not linked to any criminal activity.

“I am grateful to God for His mercy and guidance. On Monday, I was invited by the EFCC in relation to an incident involving the spraying of local and foreign currencies in public—an act considered an offence under the law regarding the abuse of the Naira,” he wrote.

He further thanked the EFCC and relevant authorities for their understanding and for confirming that the money sprayed did not originate from illicit sources.

While acknowledging the cultural significance of spraying money at Nigerian ceremonies, AY emphasised the need for the public to comply with existing laws.

“To my friends, family, and the general public, we all know that money spraying is a common feature of Nigerian celebrations, especially weddings and parties. While it’s widely accepted as a cultural expression, it’s important to understand that under Nigerian law, mutilating or abusing the Naira by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling it is a punishable offence,” he noted.

AY’s statement follows a similar disclosure by actress Iyabo Ojo, who also recounted being invited by the EFCC over currency spraying at her daughter’s high-profile wedding.

The comedian concluded by encouraging Nigerians to educate themselves on the legal implications of currency handling during public events.
