African Union Demands Global Action in Mali Crisis

The African Union (AU) has called for urgent international intervention to address the deepening political and humanitarian crisis in Mali, following months of escalating conflict and instability.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the AU urged the United Nations, regional partners, and key global powers to coordinate efforts toward restoring peace and constitutional order in the West African nation.

“The situation in Mali has reached a critical point,” the AU Peace and Security Council said. “The international community must act decisively to prevent further deterioration and ensure protection of civilians.”

Mali has faced prolonged unrest since a 2020 military coup, followed by renewed violence between government forces and armed groups after the withdrawal of U.N. peacekeepers earlier this year. Thousands have been displaced, and humanitarian agencies warn of worsening food insecurity.

The AU said it would dispatch a special envoy to engage with Mali’s transitional authorities and neighbouring states to support mediation efforts.

The bloc also reiterated its call for a clear timetable toward democratic elections, which have been repeatedly delayed since the junta took power.
