The Oyo State Government and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, have urged masquerades, festival organisers, and residents to ensure a peaceful celebration during the 2026 Egungun Festival, warning that any action that disturbs public order will not be tolerated.
The annual cultural festival, which began on Monday across Ibadanland, remains one of the most significant traditional events in Yorubaland, attracting large gatherings of participants and spectators from within and outside the state.
In separate statements issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Chief Adeola Oloko, both the government and the traditional institution stressed the need for a peaceful, orderly and law-abiding celebration.
They emphasised that while citizens are entitled to practise and celebrate their cultural heritage, such rights must be exercised responsibly without infringing on the safety and freedoms of others.
The Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, described the Egungun Festival as a vital expression of Yoruba cultural identity and ancestral heritage, noting that it has endured across generations and continues to promote unity, social cohesion and respect for tradition.

However, the monarch cautioned against the use of the festival for violence, retaliation or the settlement of personal disputes, urging masquerade groups and participants to strictly adhere to lawful conduct.
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, also raised concerns over reports of individuals blocking roads, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to residents during the festivities.
He described such conduct as unacceptable, stressing that cultural celebrations must be carried out in a manner that respects public order and the rights of all citizens.
Dr Olatubosun further warned that the possession or display of weapons and other dangerous objects during the festival would not be tolerated, adding that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
To ensure a smooth celebration, the state government has directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intensify surveillance across Ibadanland throughout the festival period. Security operatives are expected to monitor key locations, enforce traffic regulations and ensure compliance with approved routes and designated performance areas.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that acts of violence, thuggery or communal clashes would not be condoned under any circumstances.
Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate security authorities.
As the 2026 Egungun Festival continues, both the government and the traditional institution reaffirmed their commitment to preserving Yoruba cultural heritage while maintaining peace, safety and respect for the rule of law.
They maintained that all participants and residents must celebrate responsibly and contribute to a peaceful and orderly festival season.
