The Oyo State Government has honoured the late creator of Fuji music, Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (MFR), with a merit award during the 2025 Egungun Festival, held in Ibadan on Thursday. Fans across the globe have applauded the state for the well-deserved honour.
The award was presented on behalf of the government by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, who noted that Barrister’s contribution was pivotal to the emergence of fuji music as a distinct genre among Nigeria’s indigenous musical styles.
“There is no controversy about it—Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister is the pioneer who gave birth to Fuji music,” the Commissioner declared.
In a statement issued by the organisers of the Sikiru Ayinde Barrister Musical Festival Forum (BarryFest), Chairman Alhaji Laide Olawumi and Secretary Agbaakin Ademola Adesigbin expressed gratitude to the state government for recognising Barrister’s historical significance and enduring legacy.

They praised the role Barrister played in nurturing a musical tradition that has provided livelihoods for countless young people musicians, drummers, instrumentalists and support crew alike.
“We thank His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for deeming Barrister worthy of this prestigious award during the globally celebrated Egungun Festival,” the organisers stated.
They further commended the administration’s efforts to revitalise and preserve Yoruba cultural heritage, noting that, despite attempts by some to diminish Barrister’s place in history, the government has remained committed to honouring the truth.
The group also extended appreciation to Modinat Ashabi Barrytide and members of the BarryFest team for attending the festival at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.
