Nigeria Deepens Defence Modernisation With AI, Anti-Drone Technology

Nigeria is stepping up efforts to modernise its defence architecture through the deployment of artificial intelligence-powered surveillance systems, anti-drone technology, and integrated command-and-control platforms as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening national security.

The development emerged during a high-level working visit to Monaco by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, alongside senior officials of the Ministry of Defence.

During the visit, the Nigerian delegation held strategic engagements with MARSS UK Ltd and its Nigerian partner, MPS Mikopowers Ltd, over the proposed implementation of a multi-domain hybrid intelligence shield project for Nigeria’s defence sector.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Armed Forces through strategic partnerships, technology transfer, local capacity development, and sustainable defence industrial cooperation.

According to him, the Ministry of Defence must continue positioning itself as the strategic coordination hub of Nigeria’s security architecture by embracing emerging technologies to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational response.

“We must leverage technology for intelligence, surveillance and service delivery. We have partners and allies ready to support us, and we will work together as a team,” he said.

During the engagements, the delegation witnessed demonstrations of advanced radar systems, AI-enabled threat detection platforms, anti-drone interception technologies, and integrated command-and-control solutions designed to improve border security and rapid response capability.

Discussions also covered the establishment of national and regional command centres, mobile response units, and a specialised centre of excellence for simulation, training, and doctrine development.

Officials of MARSS UK reportedly showcased the NiDAR integrated command-and-control platform, alongside mobile surveillance and drone interception systems tailored to Nigeria’s evolving security needs.

The Ministry also explored proposals for local production support, indigenous technical capacity development, and long-term defence industry collaboration aimed at reducing reliance on externally maintained security systems.
