Nigeria Reaffirms South-South Cooperation With Trinidad

The Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation through a high-level bilateral engagement in Trinidad and Tobago.

The delegation, led by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NTAC, Dr Yusuf Buba Yakub, carried out the official visit on behalf of President Bola Tinubu as part of ongoing efforts to expand Nigeria’s diplomatic reach and deepen mutually beneficial partnerships with Caribbean nations.

In a statement issued by the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit of NTAC, O. Olubunmi, the delegation held strategic discussions at the Federal Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as at the Nigerian Embassy in the country.

The engagements were aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation under the South-South framework.

The visit also underscores the importance the Tinubu administration places on fostering robust cooperation among developing countries, particularly in the areas of technical assistance, capacity building, education, healthcare, and cultural exchange.

“It further aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives of promoting solidarity, shared prosperity, and sustainable development across the Global South,” the statement added.

During the engagement, the NTAC team held productive discussions with key government stakeholders in Trinidad and Tobago, focusing on enhanced collaboration within the South-South Cooperation framework.

The discussions were attended by the Chargé d’Affaires of Trinidad and Tobago, Dankaro Angye Ashumate, accompanied by the Head of Chancery, Mrs Linda Hills. Their participation highlighted the importance both countries attach to strengthening diplomatic and development ties.

The meeting also underscored Nigeria’s longstanding role in technical aid delivery, leveraging its human capital to support partner nations through the deployment of skilled professionals.

Dr Yakub reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to expand its technical assistance programme to Trinidad and Tobago, building on historical ties and shared cultural heritage.

He said the initiative reflects President Tinubu’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a key driver of development cooperation and a reliable partner in addressing shared challenges among developing nations.

The delegation also included the Director of Programmes, Ambassador Bello Jaye, and other senior officials of the Corps, whose inputs contributed to advancing discussions and identifying priority areas for collaboration.

The engagement provided an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s achievements under the Technical Aid Corps Scheme, which has deployed thousands of professionals to beneficiary countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

The visit marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria–Trinidad and Tobago relations and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation, mutual respect, and shared development goals.
