Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to introduce a real-time tracker to monitor its preparations for the 2027 general election.
The Commission’s Chairman, Professor Samuel Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos at a strategic workshop for its Administrative Secretaries.
Amupitan said the workshop was expected to produce a standard Excel-based operational tracker for Administrative Secretaries, which would be linked to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard and the Election Project Plan.
He said the Commission had previously lacked a uniform system for monitoring the operational responsibilities of its Administrative Secretaries.
Amupitan explained that the new tracker would provide Resident Electoral Commissioners, Supervisory National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and the Commission’s headquarters with real-time information on the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc staff and the level of preparedness in each state.
“This will enable us to move from reactive response to proactive management,” he said.
The INEC Chairman added that the initiative came as the National Voters’ Register approached the 100 million mark.
The strategic workshop would also focus on other key areas, including Continuous Voter Registration, logistics and materials management, electoral technology, optimisation of ad hoc staff and financial compliance.
Amupitan said the Commission planned to build on the successes and lessons learnt from recent off-cycle elections to achieve similar levels of efficiency and success across the country during the forthcoming general election, scheduled to commence in January 2027.
